What Led Me to Sell Life Insurance Online for 15 Years
12/13/2015
Visiting with a small group of close friends last evening, I brought up how I had majored in Biology my freshman year at Creighton University, but could not handle the blood. Later that night, gazing at our Christmas tree, I reflected on those past years of trying to figure out what career to pursue. I chose to work with seniors because I love that age group; but I also loved medicine, law, writing, math, and a variety of “helping” fields. Selling life insurance was so far down the list, I didn’t even think of it.
As is the case with many young adults in small towns, you either take what you can get, or create your own job. At the ripe old age of 20 and a Bachelor’s Degree in Gerontology under my belt, I began working with the City Council to start a Senior Center in my home town. I am delighted to say that a new and improved version of that center is still operating today. After 13 years of being a full time mom, I worked in the social services department of a nursing home, and then was Services Coordinator for an independent living senior housing development. However, our kids were moving away and I wanted to spend time with them, but was on call 24/7. So, as Dustin Hoffman would say in “Little Big Man”, “That was the end of my Gerontology period.”
It was at this time that a friend offered me a position as his office manager, and I got licensed in Life Insurance, Health Insurance, and Annuities, to better serve his clients. My next job was working at a funeral home, helping people write down and fund their final wishes. On 1-1-2016, I will celebrate the 15th anniversary of my current, and final, career – that of an online independent agent who specializes in finding the best Life Insurance rates for people who call us or fill out a form on our website – especially those who may have a hard time finding affordable prices elsewhere.
This is not a path I could have ever dreamed up, but it is the path God chose for me, through the graciousness and support of some wonderful people along the way. And I marvel at how my interests, talents, and experience all come together in this very unlikely field. From understanding the difference between relapsing and progressive MS, to knowing how much cash value life insurance someone can have when in a nursing home and on Medicaid, it’s like the script for this job was written for me.
So, after 15 years in this field, I want to sincerely thank those of you who recognized my passion and ability to get you the coverage you need at a price you can afford. I love the opportunity and responsibility of finding coverage that fits your budgets and meets your needs. I am grateful that I have been equipped by gifted people and lifetime experiences to fill this role. And above all, I love that life insurance helps people so very much.
Happy holidays, and again, thank you.
